The Desert, In a Day
Forty minutes from the last interchange the road runs out and the country changes entirely. How to see it without joining a convoy.
The standard desert experience is sold as a package: coach, dune bashing, camp, buffet, back by ten. It is efficient and almost entirely sealed off from the landscape it is named after.
The alternative costs less and asks more. Drive out in the late afternoon, stay on the graded tracks unless you are properly equipped and not alone, and be somewhere with a clear western horizon an hour before sunset. The light does the rest.
The conservation reserve southeast of the city is the reliable choice: oryx and gazelle move at dusk, and access is regulated enough that you are not sharing a ridge with forty vehicles.
The dunes are not the attraction. The silence is.

Do you need a 4x4 to visit the desert near Dubai?
Not for the graded access roads and reserve entrances, which are fine in a normal car. You need a proper 4x4, deflated tyres, recovery gear and ideally a second vehicle before leaving established tracks for soft sand.
